The Three Books in the New Testament
That Tell Us What We Must Do to Go to Heaven

The Gospel of John was written so that people would believe in Jesus Christ and have eternal life. John focuses on who Jesus is — the Son of God, the Savior of the world — and presents His miracles and teachings as evidence that He is the Messiah.

John's purpose is stated clearly: he wrote so that you would believe and have life in Jesus' name. This is the first step — knowing who Jesus is and putting your faith in Him.

Key themes: Jesus is God, the necessity of belief, eternal life is a free gift, Jesus' death and resurrection.

Romans is the most systematic explanation of the gospel in the Bible. The Apostle Paul explains why we need salvation (all have sinned), how God provides salvation (by grace through faith in Jesus Christ), and what the results of salvation are (a new life in the Spirit).

Romans answers the critical question: "How can a sinful person be made right with a holy God?" The answer is by faith alone in Christ alone — not by good works, not by religious ritual, but by trusting in what Jesus did for us on the cross.

Key themes: All have sinned, justification by faith, grace vs. works, new life in Christ, God's plan for Israel and the Gentiles.

1 John was written so that believers would know — with certainty — that they have eternal life. This is the book of assurance. If John tells you to believe (the Gospel of John), and Paul explains why faith saves (Romans), then John comes back and tells you how to know that your faith is genuine.

1 John gives several "tests" or evidences of true salvation: Do you walk in the light? Do you confess your sins? Do you love the brethren? Do you keep God's commandments? These are not requirements for salvation but evidences that you truly are saved.

Key themes: Assurance of salvation, walking in the light, loving one another, testing the spirits, eternal life is certain.
